Repayment

Can you pay off a HELOC early?

Review prepayment, early-closure, recording, and future-access terms before sending the final payment.

Many HELOCs can be paid down ahead of schedule, but “no prepayment penalty” does not answer every question. Paying the balance to zero, closing the line, and releasing the lien are related but different events.

Paydown versus closure

A zero balance may leave the line open for future draws under its terms. Closing the line ends access and can require a formal request. Confirm what you want before sending instructions.

Check early-closure costs

Some products recover waived closing costs or charge a fee if the line is closed within a stated period. Review the agreement and ask for the exact payoff or closure amount.

Coordinate a sale or refinance

A title or settlement company may need a payoff statement, closure authorization, and lien release. Start early so an open line does not delay the transaction.

Decide whether access still has value

Keeping an unused line can provide flexibility but may involve fees or access risk. Closing it can simplify title and reduce temptation. The right choice depends on the contract and financial plan.

Ask for the payoff and closure procedure

Confirm the balance, daily interest, fees, lien-release process, and whether future access ends.
